I’m not going to hold you up much today, just a quick question really: Do you think the clothing of today is sexier than the clothing of about two hundred years ago?
For women’s clothing, we now have bikinis that leave NOTHING to the imagination, crop tops, short shorts, mini skirts, sports bras, and bare legs (for the most part, no one wears pantyhose or stockings anymore in regular life). Compare this to corsets, bustles, gowns with peekaboo lace over the decolletage, garter belts or garters, stockings, and layers of lace and petticoats. Sorry, I’m already picking out my next ball gown. You know which way I lean.
For men’s clothing, just saw this today: Here is proof positive that even one of the sexiest men alive, Orlando Bloom, cannot look good in baggy shorts pulled low. It just ain’t happening. The only thing cute in this photo is the dog.
Now imagine him in a duster coat, tight breeches, boiled white shirt, maybe a vest, tight breeches (oh, I said that already). Oh and boots. He’d have on sexy boots.

Actually I love the clothing of 100’s of years ago. I think they are sexy not sure about the corset especially in the heat but it’s incredibly sexy. nothing is left to the imagination these days.

I love period costumes. My husband and I have costumes for Ren Fairs for Scots (Highland), medieval (knight & lady), Renaissance, and pirate. He also has a WW II airman. We have a collection of several authentic knight outfits from the movies, including “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and “Kingdom of Heaven”.
I believe covering all is more alluring than baring all.
My husband does not like to dress up. Ever. Not for Halloween or a fair or anything. It’s a shame. You’re lucky that the two of you have found something so fun and creative to do together. Of course, my husband sometimes comes home with something for me to dress up in, but that’s another topic altogether.
The clothes that leave nothing to imagination aren’t really sexy.

In the extreme heat, the women wore lightweight fabrics, and in the middle of the country, less corsets and fancy layers, more plain homespun, gingham, cotton, etc. They wore bonnets to protect their head or used umbrellas (parasols), and they stayed indoors and didn’t do much activity, if they were lucky enough to have a servant, of course. But I take your point, the dresses would be even more alluring without sweat and underarm stains, too, so I guess they were better in the colder months.
I would NOT want to have to wear them but the dresses of the past were sexier than the everyday wear of people today. It’s nice to show some skin but the imagination is such a powerful aphrodisiac that keeping something covered is a fantastic thing!

I think there are pros and cons to both but the men’s were generally more sexy and some of the women’s it honestly just depends on the options 🙂

I definitely think that clothing 200 years ago was sexier than now. However, I don’t necessarily think that they were more comfortable. 😉

I think steampunk has already taken some of our fabrics and incorporated it into an historical, albeit fictional, look, often more suited to harlots than ladies, but still . . . we could do the same with less breasts hanging out.
I have always wanted to dress in historical clothes and go to a ball, but I wouldn’t want to wear that garb all the time. Thanks for the giveaway!

I think the clothing of today is a lot less than it was back two hundred years ago. So you get to see a heck of a lot more skin today so if you think that is sexier, I would go with the clothing of today. However, back then, you were covered up a lot more and most certainly had to use your imagination a lot more (this is for male and female both so I’m not going with gender specifics here). I like the clothing from back in history but I like to cover myself up more. That being said, it’s been so darn hot I’m not thinking it would be so nice to have to be so covered up lately!! Just based on the level of sexier though, my personal choice is that I think both men and women dressed far sexier two hundred years ago and I love when music videos, movies, and books bring you back to those days and you get a great blast from the far past.

Clothes make the man! I also think its hilarious that your picture happened to be of Orlando Bloom, my sister sweats him bad and I’m constantly picking on her for it. I tell her all the time that he ruined the movie Troy for me; not only did he kill Achilles (Brad Pitt) but he walked around without a shirt. LOL She gets mad at me all the time, so it never gets old. I personally love a man in a suit, there is sometime so sexy about it. A good suit can make almost any man look good.

I think what makes clothing from 200 years ago seem sexier today is choice — we can wear jeans today or we can wear a corset to look sexy — but we don’t HAVE to walk around in 100 degree heat (with no air conditioning anywhere) in 30 lbs of petticoats with your waist compressed to 23 inches (which precluded eating….and all but the most shallow of breathing, BTW). The romanticized version of something is ALWAYS much more attractive than the reality!
